New Progress Made by Quality Standards Institute in Intelligent Active Packaging Research for Perishable Fruits

Recently, the Quality Evaluation and Control Research Team at the Quality Standards Institute has achieved new research progress in intelligent active packaging for perishable fruits. The related research findings, titled "A polysaccharide-based film synergistically reinforced by γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework embedded with trans-2-hexenal for extending shelf life of strawberry," have been published in Food Hydrocolloids, a top-tier journal in the field of food science and technology (Q1, Impact Factor = 12.4).

To address the industry challenge of postharvest strawberries being susceptible to infection by pathogenic fungi such as Alternaria and Botrytis cinerea, leading to quality deterioration, a green and biodegradable active packaging material has been developed, which significantly extends the shelf life of strawberry fruits. The natural product trans-2-hexenal (2He) exhibits excellent antibacterial properties but is highly volatile, making it difficult to achieve long-lasting antimicrobial effects. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with their unique porosity, offer high potential for the controlled release of natural products. Building on this, the study prepared a polysaccharide-based film reinforced with a γ-cyclodextrin-MOF porous material loaded with trans-2-hexenal. Tests showed that the film possesses excellent tensile strength, thermal stability, water vapor barrier properties, UV resistance, and antibacterial characteristics, while achieving the sustained release of trans-2-hexenal. When applied to postharvest strawberry preservation, the film extended the shelf life by 3–5 days and effectively maintained quality attributes such as hardness and sugar-acid content. In summary, the SP-CDMOF@2He multifunctional composite film addresses the poor stability of trans-2-hexenal through "CD-MOF loading" and integrates functions such as thermal stability, UV resistance, broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, and active preservation, providing new materials and strategies for intelligent food packaging.
